Canal Street Viaducts and Roadway Rehabilitation Improvements

Phase III: Canal Street from Adams Street to Madison Street

Update: July 31, 2024

The upcoming street and viaduct reconstruction project will take place on Canal Street between Adams Street and Madison Street starting at the end of August 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year 2025. This project is part of an ongoing multi-phase project to rehabilitate four viaducts of Canal Street between Taylor Street and Madison Street that serve as both a major corridor into Chicago’s Central Business District, and as the roof of Chicago Union Station which will improve overall Canal Street corridor, enhance the safety, accessibility, and overall quality of public infrastructure.

Key Improvements Include:

1- Bridge reconstruction: Complete removal and reconstruction of the bridge on Canal Street between Madison and Adams Streets.
2- Road reconstruction and Sidewalk upgrades: Reconstructing the pavement and sidewalks on the street section west of the viaduct.
3- Drainage Improvements: Replacing the existing 12-inch storm sewer with a new 24-inch storm sewer.
4- Lighting enhancements: Installation of new street lighting.
5- Traffic Modernization: Installation of a new traffic signal at Monroe Street intersection.
6- Aesthetic Enhancement: Trees installation, bike rack installation, and other features

Potential Impacts:

We strive to minimize inconvenience during this project, but some temporary disruptions may occur:

Traffic and Parking: The construction will be carried out in a couple of phases. To accommodate each phase, Canal Street between Adams Street and Madison Street will have partial closures. The northbound through lane will remain open during the work. Monroe Street will be closed east of Canal Street, and there will be a lane closure west of Canal Street. Detour signs will guide vehicles coming from Clinton Street. No on-street parking or loading/unloading will be allowed on the west side of Canal Street.

Sidewalk Access: At least one sidewalk will remain open during each phase of the construction. Additionally, a temporary sidewalk will be provided and protected with fencing for pedestrians (if needed), and it will be maintained by the contractor.

Access to Businesses: Access to Chicago Union Station will remain open, as well as the loading dock for 10 & 120 S. Riverside Plaza. Coordination with property managers will be done before construction regarding access to parking garage entrances and exits.

Noise and Dust: Construction will occur both day and night, so some noise and dust should be expected as part of the activities. These activities include demolishing the concrete deck of the viaduct, steel removal and erection of the viaduct, and concrete pouring of the viaduct deck.
